More Whale for Becky

Here is the wire frame that will be the enveloped by felt and wadding to make a puffy blue whale. I think it will be challenging! Soldering was fun but tricky at times, so I am looking forward to working with soft materials!
Everyone's work is looking great, very inspiring ;)

Becky and The Whale

Hey lah!
I commenced construction. Today finishing the new Hope as a whale foetus. Now I am building the rest of the furniture in the waiting room. I might have to remake the whale costume as it might be too sizable!
Hope to see other works in progress soon!

hello again

am thinking about changing the scale of my project, after seeing the space last night I think a large thing will be too cumbersome, am looking at postcard imagery at the moment. Perhaps something to do with frozen moments in time through postcard worlds. I've collected lots from Japan and may use these in some way, also the idea of just using whats around is great as then there is no cost! (Helen)

hello

Hello - it was great to meet all you guys today! thought I'd post up that cross section of sky & earth (the actual and the initial idea) - more to come

Typo-rama-dio-rama-drama

The cover of my visual diary for this project. The diorama is inspired by my obsession for letters and typography... much more to come! In the mean time heres my blog: for the love of type.

Okay time for an update (Tuesday Jan 20). My diorama is a typo-toffee-ant-farm. Heres an experiement with the toffee I did last year... and some typo-toffee with some little ants.

What is next for Hope?

Hi there!
Here is a short animation that was thrown together for Even Books Miranda July exhibition. I will be creating a new adventure for Hope for my Diorama Drama project. At Peats Ridge Festival I was inspired by an installation that comprised of a set of drawers, peepholes and little scenes within. I hope to fuse my ideas together and develop a concept to post later this week.

I love the poster Elliott, the layout, shapes and typeface are wonderful ;)
Cheers

Martha 'Diorama' Stewart

As if the inspiration wasn't flowing enough. Low and behold the deigned Queen of Craft loves dioramas too - and they love her.

Gleanings from Martha's genius:

  • "Martha composed [her] picture vertically". Like any professional, Martha likes to change-it-up where she can.
  • "Use a circle cutter to cut a hole in the top of the box. This lets in light, much like a spotlight". That's a technique I won't be shying from!
  • "Martha embellished her diorama with an owl, bear, mushrooms, and a bird." And how!

Axonometric Bliss

Presenting the poster for our extraordinary event!
The illustrations and typeface all belong to the same axonometric grid. The grid was selected as it is used to convey three dimensions in two.
Hope you like.

Artist and Designer Callout

As part of The Glorious Undead’s anticipated 2009 art festival, Diorama Drama invites you to create the microcosm of your dreams!

In a low-fi salute to craft revivals, participants are asked to create a snapshot of a new world.

Hosted at Somedays Gallery*, the available wall-space space will be divided into partitioned areas offering artists and designers a realm to create a new space. Works can be serious or satirical, elevating or depressing. The project may investigate unrequited futures or unmade pasts. It’s up to you. Sound and video work is welcomed too and there will be opportunities for performance artists to show at the opening. You even wish to create a context for existing works. All these aspects can be negotiated with the curator.

But oh, the possibilities…

The Diorama Drama exhibition will run for the whole month of February with the opening event on February 18th.

Due to the site-specific nature of the works, we are seeking commitment from interested artists and designers in the coming week and will be holding a discussion next Thursday afternoon (18/12/08) at 5.30pm at Lounge Bar on Goulburn st. If you are unable to attend but would like further information please let us know on bronandmarcel@gmail.com or dioramadrama@gmail.com . Alternatively, you can phone Bronwyn on 0416 858 606 or Elliott on 0424 426 592.

*Somedays Gallery is a space which supports emerging local artists. The gallery is a relaxed space which shares its home with the Somedays Store, a Scandinavian fashion house. The large loft style space sports white gallery walls with plenty of natural light. The perfect location for Diorama Drama.
